Take a Step Back and Reflect

Hi Reader,

Over the last few weeks I have been able to talk to some incredible people both for the podcast as well as online. I am constantly reminded about the power of the internet and how it brings people together. It has been quite a bit of extra work to do the podcast every week this year, but it has allowed me to stay consistent and hopefully have some meaningful conversations that all of you are enjoying.

I am starting to reflect on the year and have some episodes planned around that. However, they most likely won’t come out until January as I will be taking a short break over the holidays to spend time with family and our new baby. I am excited to finish this year strong with some great episodes and already have some great content planned for next year.

This is a short newsletter this week, but I am trying something new on the “This Week’s Favorites” section below. Let me know what you think by replying to this email or reaching out via Twitter @LuisDuquePE. I am curious to hear if you like it or what kind of content you would like to see. As always, please reach out with any questions or podcast ideas - the podcast is to help you, so I would love to hear from you.

Let’s continue Engineering our Future

❤️ This Week’s Favorites

📚 Reading -

The Engineer’s Wife: I just started this book a few days ago. It has been recommended a couple of times, and my wife got it for me. The book describes the story of Emily Warren Roebling, wife of the chief engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge. She helped design the bridge, but her work was lost in the shadows because she was a woman.

🎙 Listening -

Founder’s Journal: I recently discovered this podcast and have been listening to it. Alex does a great job at keeping the episodes short but packed full of great information. If you are looking for a new podcast to listen to, check this one out.

👷‍♂️ Watching -

I am going back and rewatching Mythbusters on Discovery+. I loved this show a lot growing up, and it was my first exposure to science. I am sure you have watched this show at some point in your life.

🤔 Pondering -

However, many people are holding on so tightly to what they have that they are willing to forgo gaining anything—even progress. As leaders, we need to help people overcome this attitude.

059 // Seven Reasons Why Volunteering is Important for Your Career

From a professional standpoint, volunteering will add lots of ‘people skills’ to your tool box. Since you’ll be working in teams, talking to groups of people, and even leading some of them towards a common goal, you’ll hone in on some skills that only experience will teach you. And these, of course, can be then applied to your corporate job.

Hey Reader, The end of the year is a great time to reflect on the past year and review your progress. It’s an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, recognize challenges, and plan for the future. Taking a moment to look back on the year can be incredibly beneficial as it can help you to put things into perspective, gain clarity and make more informed decisions for the future. My wife and I wanted to make it even easier to review the past year, so we decided to come up with a list of key...

Hi Reader, For over four months, I have been working on consolidating what I learned when I took the PE Exam. It has been fun to go back and see at what I learned and how I studied. Today, I am launching a course to help you prepare for the exam. It includes the tools and strategies that I personally used to prepare for the exam. Today I simply wanted to share one of the lessons on time-management from the course. This is just a glimpse into what the whole course covers. When you sign up for...

Hi Reader, It is no secret that these past two years have been hard for all of us. I have been taking some time to reflect and think back at all that has happened and it quickly becomes overwhelming. As many of you, I have been struggling with concentration and that overwhelming feeling of what to do next. This coming week, I will be taking a “personal retreat” to reflect, plan, and have clarity for what is coming next year. When I say personal retreat, I mean working on all of these while...
